People with protruding or prominent ears sometimes endure harsh comments from their peers. This is especially true for young children, who are the most likely candidates for ear surgery. Children's ears are especially well-suited for this procedure because the cartilage in young ears is pliable and easier to shape than that in adult ears. Often referred to as "ear pinning," ear surgery — or otoplasty — can not only cause the ears to lie closer to the sides of the head but also make prominent ears more proportionate to the rest of the face. The experienced surgeons at Broker, Cramer & Swanson; Ear, Nose & Throat are highly trained in the surgical techniques required for this operation and possess extensive knowledge of the structure of the ear. Our surgeons can produce excellent results with ear surgery (otoplasty) for Bryn Mawr and King of Prussia-area patients at our Phoenixville and Philadelphia locations.
Before undergoing otoplasty, the patient will have a preoperative consultation with one of our surgeons. During the consultation, the doctor will examine the patient's ears and review his or her medical history. After talking with the patient about what he or she would like to gain from having ear surgery, he will develop a customized surgical plan based on the patient's anatomy and his or her goals for surgery. Since otoplasty patients are often children, a parent must be positive that the motivation for ear surgery stems from the child's wants and needs.
Ear surgery is a highly customizable procedure. Accordingly, the techniques employed by the surgeon depend on the patient's unique circumstances. It is important, then, that the patient select a highly skilled surgeon to perform his or her surgery. As ear, nose, and throat specialists, our surgeons possess the optimal combination of surgical skill and intimate knowledge of the ears for achieving excellent results with ear surgery (otoplasty) for Bryn Mawr, King of Prussia, Phoenixville, and Philadelphia residents.
For protruding ears, the surgeon often will begin the procedure by making an incision where the ear meets the head. In some cases, the surgeon will remove some cartilage from the back of the ear and pin it into place. In other cases, no cartilage is removed. The ear is shaped and held in place with stitches. After ear surgery, the ears will be bandaged. Patients should take care not to apply pressure to their newly reshaped ears while they heal.
Ear surgery, or otoplasty, can correct overly large or protruding ears that can damage a person's self esteem. Though plastic surgery procedures such as ear surgery can never achieve "perfection," when performed by a skilled surgeon, they can help a person feel better about him or herself.
The surgeons at our Philadelphia and Phoenixville-based practice help correct deformities of the ears that can make people feel bad about their appearance. Individuals interested in ear otoplasty (ear surgery) who live in Bryn Mawr, King of Prussia, or the surrounding areas can contact our skilled surgeons to learn more.
