Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty) — Bryn Mawr, Roxborough, Philadelphia

As important components of your ability to express yourself, your eyes can say a great deal about who you are and how you feel inside. Whether you feel happy, excited, sad, angry, or tired, your eyes can convey your mood to others, even when you are trying to hide how you really feel. As we age, the skin around our eyes can begin to sag, erroneously causing us to appear unhappy, exhausted, or older than we actually are. However, eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) at our practice in the Philadelphia, Bryn Mawr, and Roxborough area can help lighten your appearance and make you look younger and more refreshed.

Before Eyelid Surgery

Patients interested in eyelid surgery at our Philadelphia practice near Bryn Mawr and Roxborough must schedule an initial consultation with one of our experienced plastic surgeons. During the initial consultation, our surgeon will determine whether or not the patient is a good blepharoplasty candidate. The best eyelid surgery candidates have puffy upper or lower eyelids that make them look tired or older than they actually are. Candidates should not have any underlying ophthalmic or other medical conditions that can become aggravated with blepharoplasty, such as dry eye, glaucoma, hyperthyroidism, hypertension, diabetes, and others. Candidates should also maintain reasonable expectations about the results of the eyelid surgery procedure. Once a patient has been determined to be an eligible candidate, our surgeon will explain the procedure in detail and evaluate the patient's needs and goals in order to gather the information needed to custom-tailor the procedure. Patients can also discuss any questions or concerns they may have regarding the procedure.

Once the blepharoplasty procedure is scheduled, our surgeon will give the patient a detailed list of things to do in order to prepare for surgery. Patients should limit their alcohol intake and stop smoking at least two weeks prior to surgery. Patients should also avoid taking aspirin, ibuprofen, and other blood-thinning medications before eyelid surgery. The day before the blepharoplasty, patients should wash their faces thoroughly and refrain from wearing cosmetic products. Patients should also arrange for transportation because they will not be able to drive after the procedure. Following these and other directions given by the plastic surgeon can help ensure a safe and successful operation and recovery.

Blepharoplasty Procedure

During the eyelid surgery procedure at our Philadelphia practice near Bryn Mawr, our surgeon creates incisions either along the crease in the upper eyelid or along the lash line of the lower eyelid, depending on which area needs to be enhanced. Once the incisions are created, the surgeon trims away excess skin and fat. When the desired eyelid shape has been achieved, the surgeon uses fine sutures, which are used to minimize scarring, to close the incisions. The result is a brighter, more refreshed eye appearance.
